It is by far one of the most difficult things to accomplish, but I think that by doing so, we (and everyone else around us) is better off because of it. In verse 45, Jesus says that by acting this way we are "sons of the Father in heaven." We show the world who we are by fighting against our animalistic tendencies and extending forgiveness to those who hurt us. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also." Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:38-39 that "You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth', but I tell you not to resist an evil person.

However, when acted upon, it creates an endless circle of strife and suffering. Without Him, revenge and hate are natural when someone wrongs us. This story is interesting to me because it is a prototype of who we are without God. Throughout the rest of the story, he exacts revenge on his traitorous friends. The quote from above is from the song "Hell to Your Doorstep" when he finds out that his friends betrayed him.

Through a trial of events, he eventually escapes and finds a trove of treasure and then renames himself The Count of Monte Cristo. In my search for new musical music to listen to, I stumbled across "The Count of Monte Cristo, The Musical." If you haven't read the Count of Monte Cristo, it is a story about a young man who is falsely accused by his friends (although he doesn't know it at the time) for a crime he didn't commit and is then sentenced to life imprisonment.
